Lift for Life Playbook:
Strength in Every Rep
Athletes Making an Impact Beyond the Game
Powered by Uplifting Athletes, turning the power of sport into hope for the 30 million Americans living with a rare disease. Join us in a movement where every rep, every mile, and every lift creates lasting change for families facing rare diseases.
Why We Move
Uplifting Athletes harnesses the extraordinary power of sport to support the rare disease community. When athletes train with purpose, they create ripples of impact that reach far beyond the field, court, or track. Every rep, mile, and lift fuels transformative change across three critical pillars:
Today
Direct support for rare disease families through Uplifting Experiences—providing hope, resources, and community when families need it most.
Tomorrow
Funding innovative research through our Young Investigator Grant program, accelerating breakthroughs that will change lives and save futures.
The Future
Developing the next generation of athlete leaders who understand their platform and power to create meaningful change in their communities.

Choose Your Challenge
Schools can run one format or host the full series
Flexibility is built into the Team UA Challenge. Whether you want to focus on a single high-energy event or create a season-long series, we've designed three distinct formats that cater to different athletic interests and abilities. Each challenge offers unique ways to compete, fundraise, and create impact.

Running Challenge
Solo 5K or team relay options (10K duo, 15K quad) with fundraising unlocking perks
Lift For Life Challenge

Pro tip: Schools that host multiple formats throughout the year create ongoing momentum, deeper community engagement, and significantly greater fundraising impact. Each event builds on the last, strengthening your rare disease advocacy presence.

The atmosphere during lift challenges is electric. Teammates coaching, crowds cheering, and that moment when someone locks out a heavy lift—pure adrenaline meeting purpose. This format works perfectly for strength-focused athletes and creates incredible photo and video content.
What Schools Provide
Simple, structured, achievable
We've designed the school participation requirements to be straightforward and manageable. You don't need special facilities or extensive resources—just engaged athletes and a commitment to community impact.
Build Mixed-Gender/Grade Teams
Form teams of 6-8 athletes with balanced male/female or grade rosters. This diversity strengthens team dynamics and broadens fundraising reach across different friend and family networks.
Engage Your Community
Tap into parent groups, local businesses, alumni networks, and community organizations. The wider you cast your net, the greater your impact—and the more connections you build for future initiatives.
Promote Through Multiple Channels
Use morning announcements, social media, team group chats, email blasts, and hallway posters. Consistent visibility drives participation and keeps momentum building through event day.
Show Up Ready
Arrive on event day with energy, enthusiasm, and a commitment to support each other. The physical preparation matters, but the collective spirit is what makes these events unforgettable.
Your Athlete Journey
From sign-up to celebration
We've mapped out a clear pathway that takes athletes from initial commitment through event day and impact celebration. Each step builds momentum and deepens connection to the mission, transforming individual effort into collective achievement.

Why This Matters
1 in 10 Americans lives with a rare disease
Thirty million Americans—many of them children—wake up every day facing conditions so rare that research funding is nearly impossible to secure. These families often feel isolated, overwhelmed, and forgotten. Your athletic effort changes that reality in three profound ways:
Hope for Today
Uplifting Experiences provide immediate support to rare disease families through memorable moments that remind them they're not alone. These experiences—from special family trips to once-in-a-lifetime opportunities—inject joy and normalcy into lives dominated by medical appointments and uncertainty.
Breakthroughs for Tomorrow
Young Investigator Grant Program funds early-career researchers pursuing innovative treatments for rare diseases. Many of these conditions receive virtually no research dollars through traditional channels. Your fundraising literally accelerates the discovery of life-saving therapies.
Leaders for the Future
Athlete Leadership Development transforms student-athletes into advocates who understand their platform and influence. These athletes become rare disease champions throughout their careers and beyond, creating ripple effects that extend impact for decades.
The rare disease community has adopted the zebra as their symbol—a reminder to medical professionals that when they hear hoofbeats, sometimes it actually is a zebra, not a horse. That's why you'll see zebra stripes throughout Team UA branding: we're proud advocates for those whose conditions are often overlooked.
Real Faces. Real Families. Real Change.
Your impact in action
Behind every dollar raised and every rep completed are families whose lives are transformed by your effort. These aren't abstract statistics—they're neighbors, classmates, and community members facing extraordinary challenges with remarkable courage.
For
"When our son was diagnosed with his rare disease, we felt completely alone. The Uplifting Experience funded by Team UA athletes gave our family hope when we desperately needed it. These young people don't realize how much their effort means to families like ours."
— Parent of a child with a rare metabolic disorder
"The Young Investigator Grant allowed me to pursue research that no traditional funding source would touch. Two years later, we're in clinical trials. None of this happens without athletes who choose to lift for something bigger than themselves."
— Research scientist, rare neurological disease
These stories represent just a fraction of the impact created by Team UA events. Every school that participates adds new chapters to this ongoing story of hope, breakthrough, and leadership.
What Event Day Looks Like
High energy from start to finish
Event day transforms your school or venue into an electric atmosphere where competition meets purpose. From the moment athletes arrive, they're immersed in an experience carefully designed to maximize energy, celebration, and impact recognition.
Pre-Event
Athletes check in, receive timing chips or scorecards, warm up together, and gather for opening ceremony pump-up
Competition
High-energy music, MC hype, college athlete station coaches, real-time leaderboard updates, and constant celebration
Cool Down
Recovery zone, team photos, behind-the-scenes interviews, and social media content creation
Awards
Closing ceremony recognizing top performers, fundraising champions, and sharing total impact numbers
The Atmosphere
  • Professional-grade sound system bumping motivational music
  • Energetic MC keeping crowds engaged between heats
  • Strength Coaches coaching proper form and offering encouragement
  • Designated "hype zones" for maximum cheering and support
  • Photo and video capture for social sharing and highlight reels
The Closing Celebration
The awards ceremony isn't just about announcing winners—it's about collectively celebrating what the entire group accomplished. We share total fundraising numbers, explain exactly what that funding will provide, and recognize both athletic achievement and fundraising leadership.
Athletes leave exhausted but energized, having pushed their limits while creating tangible impact. That combination is what makes Team UA events so memorable and builds long-term commitment to the rare disease cause.
Getting Started Is Simple
7/8-week timeline from commitment to competition
We've refined this timeline through multiple events to balance adequate preparation with maintaining momentum. Seven weeks provides enough runway for meaningful fundraising without dragging out so long that energy dissipates.
01
Week 1: Commit Your School
Athletic director or coach submits school interest form. We schedule kickoff call to discuss format options, date selection, and initial planning.
02
Week 2-3: Recruit Teams
Launch internal promotion campaign. Hold information sessions for interested athletes. Begin forming 6-8 person mixed-gender teams.
03
Week 3-5: Launch Fundraising
Athletes create personalized fundraising pages. Send initial asks to family and friends. Share first social media posts introducing the challenge.
04
Weeks 4-7: Train + Fundraise
Teams follow training guides specific to their chosen format. Weekly fundraising updates and social media pushes. Track progress toward tier goals.
05
Week 8: Event Day
Compete with maximum effort, celebrate achievements, recognize impact, and share final fundraising totals with participants and donors.

Pro Tip: Schools that build in weekly team check-ins during Weeks 4-6 see significantly higher fundraising totals. Regular touchpoints maintain momentum and allow peer encouragement to drive results.
